Hi, I’m Charlie Donaldson. From 2012 to 2018, I ran a one-on-one financial aid consulting practice, helping parents understand exactly how the FAFSA and CSS Profile formulas work — and how the timing of their income and assets before filing changes what a family is actually expected to pay.

I saw the same thing over and over: families leaving aid on the table not because they didn’t qualify, but because nobody had ever explained how the formulas respond to positioning. School counselors don’t teach this. Most financial advisors aren’t trained on the aid formulas specifically. So the same handful of moves kept getting missed, year after year.

Over time I also watched the industry shift toward high-pressure sales and product-first pitches, which never sat right with me. Families needed the mechanics explained, not a hard sell — so I stepped away from 1:1 work and built College Money Map instead: the same formula-mechanics teaching, without the sales pitch attached.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Finance and an MBA with a concentration in Finance, and I taught Finance and Economics at Wilmington University from 2016 to 2018.

At home, I’m living this right alongside my own kids — our family spans college, high school, and elementary ages, so we’re going through every stage of this at once.
